About Me

My name is Professor David Smithard, and at Green Smith Medical, I offer my services as a medical consultant. Based in Kent, my medical clinic provides expert assessments and reporting, particularly in the fields of Geriatrics and Stroke Care. I also have experience in many aspects of medico-legal work, including medical negligence for both claimants and defendants, and I have attended the Crown Court, Family Court, and tribunals. Experience
I qualified from the London Hospital Medical College in 1986 and since 1994, I have been a consultant in Geriatrics and Frailty of Old Age. From 1994 to 2009, I served as a consultant in Stroke Care.
As a founder member of the British Association of Stroke Physicians, I have acted in several roles on both the scientific and executive committees, including Deputy and then Honorary Secretary. I am also a founder member of the UK Swallowing Research Group, holding the role of Chair/President 2008 and 2024. My other memberships include:

- International Christian Medical and Dental Association
Furthermore, I have experience managing the health needs of all aspects of older and frail adults, in the community, acute care, rehabilitation and care homes. I have undertaken holistic care and comprehensive geriatric assessments (CGA).
Having worked in a multidisciplinary environment within and outside of the hospital environment, I have developed and implemented services in both older age medicine and stroke medicine.

Research Interests
My research interests are in the field of swallowing impairments and frailty. Recent studies have focused on the area of aspiration pneumonia, diagnosis, and management and eating and drinking with acknowledged risk, e.g., people eating and drinking when their swallowing is impaired or at the end of life.
